Welcome to Peter's Drum Stories...
Neil Peart comes to mind. Back in the day, when things were right. We
toured with Rush, and Neil just joined the band. The minute I saw him play, I
said he was great. Outstanding Drummer! I nick named him "Big Head Morgan" that
is between us and them. I loved touring with Rush. Then we would stay in Holiday
Inns. It was the winter, we would sit outside along the balcony with a blanket
on us to keep warm. We would talk about making it and drinking our Jack Daniel's
and sharing a bottle of Scotch. Well, both our dreams came true. I really like
them guys, we had so much fun. Rush are true gentlemen, Canada should be proud
of them. I miss them.

Hi, The second time we played MSG, I was just up like always. My favorite place
in the world. I think maybe the second song, I am flying, feeling great, home
sweet home and I am thinking and bang...I get hit with an egg in the eye. It
hurt a lot, now theirs egg every where, in my face, on my drums, cymbals, drum
tech and I can see thru one eye, stars thru my left and you know later I had a
nice black eye. I was so angry and hurt. I could not believe this happened in my
home? I kept playing while my tech would clean me and the drums up. I don't know
who did it, till today, so if the person who threw the egg is reading this, You
are an ASSHOLE. Why???
I Love New York!

When I was a boy, I would bang on my poor mom's pots and pans with everything to hit them with, Like butter knifes, forks, wooden spoons - The big ones your mom cooks with, sounded great, But time went on and my dad got me a pair of brushes, You know drum brushes - Jazz. They were very old, he found them on one of his job's moving furniture in and out of old houses, They were made of metal. So I started to play on any and everything, That had a cool sound. Now the best sound I found was a phone book, Man it sounded like a snare drum, Played right on a hard couch pillow or a wooden chair or a garbage can cover. Today it would sound good on a garbage plastic can. Anyway, If all you got are brushes, Try it, It's a start. When you get sticks, Look out!

My first snare drum, Again my Dad found an old army snare drum. It was in an old house they were breaking down in the neighborhood. It was all chrome, Very tarnished and the bottom was broken off. So no snare. It sounded like a high Tom Tom, But I made it shine like a star. I would put it on a chair or box, Didn't have a snare drum stand, So I had to add a leg, Trying not to cover up the bottom. When I use to strike it, It sounded like a Tom Tom, But when I used my brush it sounded like a snare. Man I loved that drum. Always remember your first snare drum. Some of us lucky guys get a full set right off the bat.

I have not broke a drum head or pedal in years. On this tour, One night the
snare head went. That's what Tom Toms are for, so I played on my front Tom as
the snare, Not the same sound, but the rule of drums is you NEVER stop playing.
Next night, the pedal went, the real nightmare, Bass drum, NO bottom. Holy shit
you say! Play the floor Tom as the Bass drum. Now if your lucky like me, your
drum tech. has an extra snare and pedal on the side, that you pray he never has
to use. So while I keep playing he changes the snare and pedal as the song keeps
going. NEVER stop playing and don't panic, you will get thru it. I hope this
helps. Keep playing!!!
